FAFSA state deadline tracker

Updated

The FAFSA has three deadlines, not one: your school's deadline (earliest, and usually the one that matters most for that school's own aid), your state's deadline (for state grants and scholarships), and the federal deadline (June 30, 2027 for the 2026-2027 cycle, and mostly a formality). Use the tool below to look up your state's 2026-2027 deadline. Many state grant programs are funds-limited and pay out first-come, first-served, so filing the week your state opens matters more than the calendar date on the page.

Find your state's FAFSA deadline

Pick your state below to see its 2026-2027 deadline, whether it is a hard cutoff or a priority date, and any program-specific detail. This tool covers state-level deadlines only; for the full federal deadline and the reasoning behind "file early," see the FAFSA deadlines guide.

What are the three FAFSA deadline layers?

Every FAFSA cycle actually has three separate deadlines stacked on top of each other, and they run in the opposite order of urgency from what most people assume:

Federal Student Aid's own guidance ranks these by urgency, not by calendar order: beat your school's deadline first, then your state's, and the federal date takes care of itself.

Why does the state deadline matter more than the federal one?

Because state aid is frequently funds-limited, not qualification-limited. Programs like Illinois's Monetary Award Program (MAP), Kentucky's state grants, Alaska's Education Grant, and several others explicitly pay out awards until the money runs out, on a first-filed, first-served basis. Two students with identical financial need can get different results depending only on when they submitted the FAFSA relative to when their state's funds were exhausted, which can happen months before any published deadline. A hard state cutoff (like Florida's or Delaware's) is at least predictable; a funds-limited "as soon as possible" deadline is not, and it rewards filing in the first weeks after the FAFSA opens.

When does my state's FAFSA deadline actually fall?

The table below covers all 50 states plus DC for the 2026-2027 award year. Where a state sets no fixed statewide date, that is recorded honestly as "varies" or "as soon as possible" rather than invented, because several state aid programs genuinely have no single hard deadline; they either delegate the decision to each school's financial aid office or pay out until funds run dry.

What does "priority deadline" mean versus a hard deadline?

A hard deadline is a cutoff: file after it and you are generally no longer eligible for that program, full stop (subject to whatever grace your state or school allows). A priority deadline is softer: file by that date and you are guaranteed full consideration for the aid pool; file after it and you might still get something, but only from whatever is left once priority applicants are funded. An "as soon as possible" deadline is the most urgent of all in practice, even though it looks the vaguest on paper: it means the program pays out on a rolling basis until its funds are gone, so the real deadline is whenever the money runs out, which nobody can predict in advance.

What if my state says "contact your financial aid office"?

A number of states, including Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, set no statewide FAFSA deadline at all. In those states, state and institutional aid deadlines are set individually by each college or career school's financial aid office. If your state shows "varies" above, the practical move is the same either way: file as soon as the FAFSA opens for the cycle, then ask your school's financial aid office directly what its own priority date is.

The flat truth: file for your state's deadline, not the federal one

The federal June 30, 2027 deadline is real, but almost nobody should plan around it. The date that actually decides your aid is your state's (and your school's), and for a meaningful share of states that date is really "as soon as possible," because the money runs out. Look up your state above, treat "October" as your practical filing target, and confirm the exact current figure on the official studentaid.gov page before you finalize anything, since state deadlines shift every award year.

This tool covers state deadlines only. For the full deadline picture, including the federal date, the correction deadline, and when the FAFSA opens, see the FAFSA deadlines guide.
