South Dakota FAFSA deadline
South Dakota sets no statewide FAFSA deadline, and that is by design rather than an oversight. The date that governs your state aid is set by your college, so it differs from school to school. The 2027-2028 FAFSA is in beta testing now and will be available to everyone by October 1, 2026. What decides whether you actually get South Dakota money is explained below.
How does South Dakota actually hand out state aid?
South Dakota's two need-based programs have no student application: each college reads your FAFSA and picks recipients, so your school's priority date is the deadline. Where the state DOES set firm dates is on its merit and workforce scholarships, all run through one Board of Regents portal with a published application timeline.
When should you file the FAFSA in South Dakota?
| What | When | Award year |
|---|---|---|
| 2027-2028 FAFSA opens | By October 1, 2026 | 2027-2028 |
| South Dakota state aid deadline | Check with your financial aid office | 2026-2027 |
| Federal deadline | June 30, 2027, 11:59 p.m. Central time | 2026-2027 |
| Your college's priority date | Varies by school, often earlier than the state's | Ask your aid office |
Read that table with the award year in mind. The South Dakota and federal dates shown are for the 2026-2027 cycle, which is the year already under way. If you are applying for aid to start in autumn 2027, the cycle that matters to you is 2027-2028, and most states publish those dates in the autumn and winter.
What financial aid does South Dakota offer?
| Program | Deadline | Award year | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship (SDOS) | September 1 for a fall start, January 15 for spring | standing dates tied to your first term | Up to $7,500 over four years. The deadline is tied to when you first enrol, not the FAFSA. Requires residency at high school graduation plus either ACT 24 with the Advanced Honors curriculum and a 3.0, or ACT 28. Statute gives five years after graduation to enter. |
| SD Needs Based Scholarship Grant | None published | 2026-2027 | $500 to $2,000. No application form exists; each college evaluates your FAFSA and picks students with the highest unmet need. File by your college's priority date. |
| Dakota Corps Scholarship | November 1 to December 15 | the Dec 2026 window funds the year AFTER 2026-2027 | Full tuition for graduates who commit in writing to work in a critical-need occupation in the state. Needs a 2.8 GPA and ACT 27, applied for within a year of high school graduation. |
| Critical Teaching Needs Scholarship | November 1 to December 15 | critical-need list labelled AY 2026-2027 | For students in the last two years of an education program who agree to teach in a South Dakota critical-need position for five years. Converts to an interest-bearing loan if you do not. For 2026-2027 every K-12 teaching position counts as critical need. |
The authority here is the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR), which publishes the current rules at https://sdbor.edu/cost-aid/scholarships/. Deadlines and award amounts change every year, so check there before relying on any figure on this page.
One thing to watch out for in South Dakota
If you search for the Dakota Corps Scholarship you may land on an old page on a state web address that tells you to post a paper form by February 1. That page is abandoned and its application form dates from 2009. The real deadline runs through the Board of Regents portal and closes December 15, so use the portal.
What happens if you miss the South Dakota deadline?
That depends on your college, because your college sets the date. Two schools in South Dakota can have priority deadlines months apart, so the only reliable answer comes from your own financial aid office. Ask them two things: their priority date for institutional aid, and whether any state programs they administer have an earlier cutoff of their own.
The flat truth on the South Dakota FAFSA deadline
The absence of a deadline is not permission to wait, it is the opposite. In South Dakota the money is the deadline: it goes to whoever filed first, and when a campus has committed its allocation a later applicant can still qualify on paper and receive nothing. File as soon as the form opens, then ask your college for its own priority date.
