West Virginia FAFSA deadline

West Virginia sets a real cutoff for state aid, not a suggestion. File after it and you are not considered for West Virginia state grant money that year, even though the federal FAFSA stays open much longer. For the 2026-2027 cycle that date was March 1, 2026, which has now passed. The 2027-2028 FAFSA is in beta testing now and will be available to everyone by October 1, 2026. We do not yet have a 2027-2028 date for West Virginia, since states generally publish them over the autumn and winter, so file as soon as the form opens and check with your aid office.

Read that table with the award year in mind. The West Virginia and federal dates shown are for the 2026-2027 cycle, which is the year already under way. If you are applying for aid to start in autumn 2027, the cycle that matters to you is 2027-2028, and most states publish those dates in the autumn and winter.

What financial aid does West Virginia offer?

Deadline for the PROMISE Scholarship (new applicants must also file a separate form at cfwv.com). The WV Higher Education Grant and WV Invests Grant are due April 15, 2026 (priority for Invests).

State grant programs change with each legislative session and each budget, so treat your state's own page as the authority rather than any summary, this one included.

What happens if you miss the West Virginia deadline?

You lose West Virginia state grant money for that year. A hard date means the state stops considering applications, and there is generally no appeal for simply having filed late. Federal aid is separate: Pell Grants and federal loans stay available as long as you file before the federal deadline, so a missed state deadline is a real loss but not the end of your aid.

The flat truth on the West Virginia FAFSA deadline

Put your college's date and the state's date in the same calendar, and work to whichever is earlier. It is usually the college's. Then file as soon as the form opens rather than as close to the deadline as you can manage, because in most states the grant money is finite.
