Sales tax in Union County, Illinois
There is no single sales tax rate in Union County. It runs from 8.5% to 9.5% depending on the exact address, because cities and special districts inside the county levy their own on top of the 6.25% state rate. The 6.25% state rate applies everywhere in the county; everything above that depends on where you are standing.
What is the sales tax rate in Union County?
| Illinois state rate | 6.25% |
|---|---|
| Union County rate | 2.25% |
| Lowest combined rate in the county | 8.5% |
| Highest combined rate in the county | 9.5% |
The two combined figures are the lowest and highest totals found anywhere inside the county. They are not a state rate plus a county rate added together, and adding the rows above will not reproduce them, because cities and special districts levy in between.
Why the rate here is not the whole story
Illinois charges 6.25 percent statewide on general merchandise. Only 5 percent of that is kept by the state and 1.25 percent is passed straight through to the municipality or county where the sale is sourced, but the whole 6.25 percent is imposed by the state and every location in Illinois pays it. Municipalities, business districts and transit districts then add their own rates on boundaries that do not follow county lines, so a single rate for the whole county does not exist. The county itself levies 2.25 percent countywide. The floor of 8.5 percent is in unincorporated county. The ceiling of 9.5 percent is at Anna. These figures are general merchandise rates. Qualifying drugs and medical appliances are taxed at a lower rate that starts at 1 percent statewide, and since January 1 2026 groceries carry no state rate at all although a municipality or county may impose 1 percent of its own, so neither belongs in the range here.
How do I find the exact rate for an address in Union County?
Because the rate changes within the county, an address is the only way to get it right. Use Illinois's own lookup. A vendor's calculator is not the state speaking.
Who has to collect sales tax in Union County?
A seller with a physical presence in Illinois collects at the rate for the address where the sale takes place. A remote seller collects once it passes Illinois's economic nexus threshold, which is a separate question from the rate and is covered on our sales tax nexus checker.
